It was a pretty thrilling experience driving through the country that hosted Lord of the Rings. We headed north from Auckland, so we witnessed the scenery transform from glass and concrete to rugged and wild terrain.
We arrived at Butterfly Bay, a super secluded home with a private beach.
The long days were spent oceanside, consuming my weight in kiwi and Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. There were many highlights of the trip, but my favorites are always the culinary ones. Our host ventured off on his boat and caught a red snapper, which was immediately put on the grill, along with other New Zealand treasures we found at the local market. There was plenty of local meats and produce — and mostly everything went on the barbie!
Nights were spent watching the full moon, hen being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves approaching and being broken by the beach. The full moons were spectacular, an orange sphere hanging low in the sky. You will feel like you are one with nature, a great place to completely unwind and disconnect from the demands of modern day life.
